The Southern Pacific's "Daylight" trains of the 1930s were hailed by proud Californians as "the world's most beautiful trains". After being extinct since the mid-1950s, the last streamlined GS-4 4-8-4, No. 4449 and a matching train in the brilliant red, orange, black and silver livery, were returned to service for excursion runs in the early 1980s. No. 4449 was at Klamath Falls, Oregon, the night of April 25, 1981, when the 1941 Lima-built locomotive was en route to the opening ceremonies of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.
